The PC Engine CD-ROM² system, encompassing the original CD-ROM² and later Super CD-ROM² hardware, was engineered by Hudson Soft to pair with Japan's compact PC Engine console, adding extra RAM, CD-quality music, and animated cutscenes; it launched domestically on April 6 1988 with nationwide rollout through 1989, and its successors arrived in late 1991 ahead of exports to Asia-Pacific markets.
